Black national championships[edit]

To my understanding black national championships are recognized as national championships, but it seems to be split whether or not they should be listed as 'national' in the head coaching record template. In Chennis Berry the Tigers have been named back-to-back champs and so I changed it from 'conference' to 'national' so I was wondering if there is a standard on if it should be listed as 'national.' Thank you Thetreesarespeakingtome (talk) 13:27, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure we every established a standard for black national championships in the head coaching record tables, but we should. It's probably best to open up a discussion at WT:CFB and ping ParkerLyme there. Jweiss11 (talk) 01:26, 24 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Mass category removing[edit]

Hey @Jweiss11, I don't know if this something that is of any concern to anybody and I am unsure if it matters but a dear editor (User:Johnpacklambert) is removing coaches and players from large amounts of categories and replacing them with new ones (1, 2, and 3). In my opinion, while the new ones can be used just alongside the other categories and not in replacement of them. Thetreesarespeakingtome (talk) 17:40, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It is overcategorization to place people in 10 categories for the different teams thry were ob the coaching staff of. What is defining is the type of coach thry were, not in a large number of cases the particular team they worked for. Especially when thry were there only for one playing season. I am not removing any players from playing categories. That is an incorrect characterization of what I am doing. However when a person was offensive coordinator at 4 colleges, the fact that he was an offensive coordinator is defining, the 4 colleges he worked for in a lot of cases are not.John Pack Lambert (talk) 17:45, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Offensive and defensive coordinators are significant roles. Having such a role at a major program is IMO a defining characteristic. I'm interested to hear what others think. Probably best to seek consensus before making mass changes. Cbl62 (talk) 17:50, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Our consensus practice has always been that any assistant coaching position is defining enough for category inclusion. And that extends beyond just college football. Jweiss11 (talk) 17:52, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Tagging Rikster2 for visibility to this potential snowball of mass editing destruction. One rogue J.O. is unilaterally deciding to (potentially) uproot nearly 20 years' worth of multiple college sports wikiprojects' standardization by removing coaching categories because he, by himself, with no one else (as in nobody else on Wikipedia) doesn't like coaching categories on an article unless it's a head coaching cat. Be super, super mindful of this editor, Rikster. I will sound the f'ing horn to the all the college sports editors if this starts becoming an issue. Hey Jweiss--you're a football expert. Can you do something with this article, at least the first part? Thanks so much! Drmies (talk) 17:57, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bythwood probably isn't notable for his football career. He lettered for the 1992 Miami Hurricanes football team, but doesn't appear to have been a regular starter, and I'm not seeing anything on Newspapers.com that would pass him on GNG for his college football career at Miami. "Picked as a free agent by the Cleveland Browns" is a funny sentence. Free agents aren't picked. Draftees are. Free agents get signed. Maybe Bythwood was invited to training camp by the Browns in 1994, but he never played in the NFL. If he isn't notable for his music career, the article should be AfD'd. Jweiss11 (talk) 18:06, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for taking a look. The "picked" thing may have been mine, and I see now that it's really a draft word, of course. I was trying to make *something* out of nothing--did you see the history? Thanks again, Drmies (talk) 19:57, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it was promotional junk before you pared it down. I don't think there's a something worth saving here, unless Bythwood is notable for his music. But that seems doubtful as well. Jweiss11 (talk) 20:00, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm actually surprised that there's so many such junk biographies around of NFL players--or supposed NFL players. Just ran into another: Reggie Stephens (cornerback). Drmies (talk) 02:04, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Reggie Stephens is a legit notable NFL player. That's just a poorly-formed article. I'm working on cleaning it up and adding a couple references. Jweiss11 (talk) 03:32, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Haven't found the final standings either. I did find this article from September, which lists the conference members. Jweiss11 (talk) 21:16, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's a start at least. BTW, I initially avoided the "PC" short form for the Pioneer Conference, but changed it when I found that contemporaneous sources used the "PC" short form. E.g., here, here, here (also including standings as of 11/19). Cbl62 (talk) 21:45, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Let'srun:, if you continue to nominate more categories like these before addressing open questions about your prior similar nominations (posed here and here), I will seek the intervention of an administrator to enforce some sort of CfD injunction against you. Navbox collapsing[edit]

I've seen you working in this area before so I would like your thoughts. I'm not really sure if "Links to related articles" is the best title for these. First off, navboxes don't even appear on mobile so people have a hard enough time even knowing they exist, and "Links to related articles" makes it looks a header for the categories, given that the purple/whiteish box kind of blends into the background and categories are also links to related articles. How about just "navigational boxes" or something? ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 18:03, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Article Quality[edit]

Hello! I have recently been having fun writing expanded (non-stubs) and wanted to see if they're sufficiently written / have quality information that is notable. Whenever you get the chance if you could look that'd be greatly appreciated. (John Snell (American football), James Macholtz, and Dick Young (American football coach) are a few recent ones). Thetreesarespeakingtome (talk) 18:27, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thetreesarespeakingtome, there articles all look good. Nice work! Jweiss11 (talk) 19:28, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Happy First Edit Day![edit]

Grubb[edit]

Sorry for the style edit. Was just updating the mdy process. I usually need at least ref field changes to feel like updating the mdy date being a worthwhile edit. I went ahead and added two verifiable refs from the school and the SI Vault. Red Director (talk) 18:24, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Red Director, thanks for making those additions. That way I had formatted those newspapers.com citations was actually somewhat irregular, so I made edits to order the fields as they display. What is your mdy process? Jweiss11 (talk) 18:40, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Some editors just update the month with no substantive changes to the article. I usually at least need at least one or two improvements to make the edit worthy in my opinion. Most of the ones I do that on have substantive changes, like the date structure is off on many refs. The ref fields being reordered is part of the 'normalization' tool on the ProveIt tool. That usually is the bare minimum for me to make those changes. To be honest, I do not love those changes but some articles are so small that I feel like I won't be on their page again because someone else is unlikely to add anything until they do something noteworthy, which is doubtful for many, or their death down the line. Red Director (talk) 18:44, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What's the point of updating the month if substantive changes to the refs haven't been made or new refs haven't been added since the placement of the mdy template? Jweiss11 (talk) 19:03, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That is why an edit for the sake of the month being current makes the edit seem like a waste in my opinion. I have seen that plenty over the years. Usually the main purpose of the mdy, and dmy for that matter, edit is to get all of the refs on the same date structure, especially have a lot of content and verification have been added. Just got in a lull on editing some older Tennessee players and later saw no dates changed on Grubb. I will take better care in the future and add a little more to what is acceptable in my opinion. Been on the Vols players for over a month now. Red Director (talk) 19:16, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Conference standings[edit]

@Jweiss11, I am working on John J. Knight of Bethany (WV) and from 1930 to 1934 they are listed twice under the Tri-State Conference and the West Virginia Athletic Conference...and my question is which one should I use for the record table. Thanks! Thetreesarespeakingtome (talk) 23:30, 19 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thetreesarespeakingtome, you want to report both conferences. See Ed Kubale or Larry Mullins for an example of how I've handed that. Jweiss11 (talk) 00:32, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Editor of the Week[edit]

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:WikiOriginal-9 submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I would like to nominate Jweiss11 to be Editor of the Week. Jweiss11 has been editing since 2005 and is one of the most prolific Wikipedians of all time, contributing to college sports articles for almost two decades. He has amassed over 500,000 edits (#42 all time), cleaning up an untold number of infoboxes and making pages conform to style guidelines. A prominent member of the College football WikiProject. He has created over 1,000 articles. What is also impressive about his contributions is that he has never used any semi-automated tools that I am aware of (even HotCat). He may very well have the most manual edits of all-time. Many editors wonder where the college football project would be without all his improvements. This nomination was seconded by BeanieFan11.

You can copy the following text to your user page to display a user box proclaiming your selection as Editor of the Week:

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024[edit]

Hello Jweiss11,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Reminders:
