Sir WG Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft Company , ou Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft , était un avionneur britannique .
Histoire
Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft a été créé en tant que département aérien du groupe d'ingénierie Sir WG Armstrong Whitworth & Company à Newcastle-upon-Tyne en 1912, et à partir de c. De 1914 à 1917, le concepteur d'avions hollandais Frederick Koolhoven (d'où les modèles "FK").
En 1920, Armstrong Whitworth acquiert le fabricant de moteurs et d'automobiles Siddeley-Deasy . Les activités moteurs et automobiles des deux sociétés ont été scindées sous le nom d' Armstrong Siddeley et les intérêts aéronautiques sous le nom de Sir WG Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft Company. Lorsque Vickers et Armstrong Whitworth fusionnèrent en 1927 pour former Vickers-Armstrongs , Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft et Armstrong Siddeley furent rachetés par JD Siddeley et ne rejoignirent pas le nouveau groupement. Cela a laissé deux compagnies d'aviation avec Armstrong dans le nom - Vickers-Armstrongs (généralement connu sous le nom de «Vickers») et «Armstrong-Whitworth».
L'avion le plus réussi fabriqué par Armstrong-Whitworth dans l'entre-deux-guerres était le Siskin qui a volé pour la première fois en 1919 et est resté en service de la RAF jusqu'en 1932, avec 485 produits.
En 1935, JD Siddeley prend sa retraite et Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft est racheté par Hawker Aircraft , le nouveau groupe devenant Hawker Siddeley Aircraft . Les sociétés composantes de Hawker Siddeley ont coopéré, mais ont fonctionné comme des entités individuelles.
En mars 1936, le premier bombardier Armstrong Whitworth Whitley effectua son vol inaugural et un total de 1814 furent produits pour la RAF, se terminant en juillet 1943. Pendant la guerre, Armstrong Whitworth produisit également 1 328 Avro Lancaster et conçut le bombardier de reconnaissance Armstrong Whitworth Albemarle. qui a ensuite été fabriqué par AW Hawksley Ltd, une partie du groupe Hawker Siddeley.
Armstrong Whitworth a construit 281 Avro Lincolns à Baginton de 1945 à 1951. Puis, au cours des années 1950, Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft a construit de nombreux chasseurs à réaction Gloster Meteor , Hawker Seahawk , Hawker Hunter et Gloster Javelin dans leurs usines de Bitteswell et Baginton pour livraison à la Royal Air Force , la Royal Navy et la Royal Belgian Air Force .
L' avion de ligne Armstrong Whitworth Apollo a échoué et la société a finalement fusionné avec une autre société Hawker Siddeley, Gloster Aircraft Company , pour former Whitworth Gloster Aircraft en 1961. En 1963, Hawker Siddeley a supprimé les noms des sociétés de composants de ses produits, le dernier Armstrong Whitworth produit, l' Argosy , devenant le Hawker Siddeley Argosy.
